An international self-organized meeting on contact improvisation and body politics

8 – 13 April 2009, La Torre, Teruel (Spanish state)

This meeting is about how the social relations of domination and exploitation (gender, race, class, sexuality…) become concrete and material in our bodies, our patterns of movement, our ways of touching and seeing.

Our aim is to develop new combinations of emancipatory practices that take into account that body, emotion, mind are inseparable. We would like to go beyond the boundaries between art, therapy and politics…

So as to have some concrete tools of practice and exploration, we propose to spend most of the first days of the meeting studying the basics of contact improvisation: waking up our reflexes and sense of balance, working with the weight of the body, with relaxation, introducing a very subtle way to interact and negotiate through touch and movement.

In the second part of the meeting we propose to concentrate more on (verbal and physical) exchanges in working groups on different subjects:

Leading and following ++ The No ++ Touch ++ The gaze ++ Body and whiteness ++ Heteronormativity ++ The weight of the body ++ Taking up space ++ The boundaries of the ego ++ Sexualities and sensualities ++ The socialisation of bodies ++ Etc

We propose to explore these themes starting from concrete situations in the practice of contact improvisation, then connecting this “material” with our experiences in everyday life, and with our vision and critique of society.

The meeting is open to all genders, but we thought that maybe we could work in different kinds of non-mixed groups at different times.

The fact that we as the organizers make thematic proposals does not mean that everything is fixed in advance. Come with your ideas, there is room for them! And of course the meeting is open to “beginners” as well as people with lots of movement experience.

This meeting will take place in the countryside, at the house of a collective that frequently hosts self-organized projects, for example feminist self-defense workshops.

There is a Spanish, an English, a French and a German version of this invitation, which we will send to various people in different countries. We hope the meeting will be very international so probably we will be working in at least three languages (Spanish, English and French).

We think it is of great importance that translations be organized in an efficient and collective manner. Translating could also be an opportunity for learning and making new experiences. And, “translation” in a more general sense could be seen as an issue very much connected with the other themes of this meeting.

At “La Torre” there is a big studio in which it’s possible to work with up to thirty people. We propose two daily sessions of three hours each, one from 10 am to 1 pm, the other from 5 pm to 8 pm. For the first few days the program will be mostly fixed in advance by us, the organizers, then it becomes more and more open to your contributions…

We thought that, beside the “main sessions” (10 am -1 pm, 5 pm – 8 pm), in which ideally everyone would take part, once we are on location, we all together will surely add other activities (for example a qi gong class, a discussion) late at night and/or early in the morning, in which people would take part according to their interests, their sleeping patterns, their energy etc

The interval from one to five in the afternoon is meant to be a time to prepare food without having to rush, to eat and have plenty of time to digest before we start moving again, take a nap or do whatever you want…

We will collectively deal with cleaning, cooking, emotional states…
The preparation group will take responsibility for doing the shopping in advance.

The financial contribution for the food and for the house will probably be around 20 to 30€ per person. This said, if someone can’t pay this, we will find a solution by redistributing amongst us…

We will be camping, so come equipped with a tent, a mat, a sleeping bag, rain gear… warm clothing as well, because the place is in the interior of the country, so even if it’s hot during the day, the nights and the mornings may be quite cool… For the movement practice, bring comfortable and soft clothing (no buttons or zippers if possible), and kneepads.

Une rencontre internationale et autogérée autour du contact improvisation et les politiques du corps

8 – 13 avril 2009, La Torre, Teruel (État espagnol)

Avec cette rencontre nous voulons aborder comment les rapports sociaux de domination et d’exploitation (genre, “race”, classe, sexualité…) se concrétisent, s’incarnent dans nos corps, nos habitudes de bouger, nos façons de toucher et de voir.

Notre but est de développer de nouvelles combinaisons de pratiques émancipatrices qui prennent en compte que le corps, l’émotion et l’esprit sont inséparables. Nous aimerions dépasser les limites entre art, soins et politique…

Pour nous donner des outils concrets de pratique et d’exploration, nous proposons de dédier les premiers jours de la rencontre plutôt à une apprentissage des bases du contact improvisation: un éveil des réflexes et de l’équilibre, un travail sur le poids du corps, la détente, une apprentissage d’une façon très subtile de dialoguer et de négocier par le toucher et par le mouvement.

Dans la deuxième partie de la rencontre nous proposons de nous concentrer sur des échanges (verbaux et physiques) dans des groupes de travail sur différents sujets:

Suivre et guider ++ Le Non ++ Le toucher ++ Le regard ++ Le corps et la blanchité ++ Hétéronormativité ++ Le poids du corps ++ Prendre l’espace ++ Les limites du moi ++ Sexualités et sensualités ++ La socialisation des corps ++ Etc…

Nous proposons d’explorer ces thèmes à partir de situations concrètes dans la pratique du contact improvisation, en faisant le lien entre ce “matériel”, nos expériences dans la vie quotidienne et notre vision et critique de la société.

C’est une rencontre mixte, mais on a pensé qu’à différents moments on pourrait utiliser différentes formes de non-mixité.

Le fait que nous les organisateurices faisons des propositions thématiques ne veut pas dire que tout est fixé à l’avance. Venez avec vos idées, il y aura de la place pour elles! Et bien sûr la rencontre est ouverte aux “débutant-e-s” ainsi qu’aux personnes plus expérimentées dans le domaine du mouvement.

Cette rencontre aura lieu à la campagne, dans la maison d’un collectif qui accueille régulièrement des projets autogérés, des stages d’autodéfense féministe par exemple.

Il y a une version espagnole, anglaise, française et allemande de cette lettre d’invitation, qu’on va envoyer à plein de gens dans différents pays. Nous espérons que la rencontre sera très internationale. Probablement on va donc fonctionner de façon au moins trilingue (espagnol, anglais, français).

Nous pensons que c’est d’une grande importance que les traductions soient organisées de façon collective et efficace. La traduction peut aussi être un terrain d’apprentissage et de nouvelles expériences – et d’ailleurs on pourrait voir la traduction dans un sens large comme un sujet lié aux autres thèmes de cette rencontre…

A “La Torre” il y a une grande salle dans laquelle on peut travailler avec un groupe de trente personnes. On propose deux séances de travail de trois heures tous les jours, une de 10h à 13h, et une autre de 17h à 20h. Pour les premiers jours, la plupart du programme sera fixé d’avance par nous les organisateurices, après ça devient de plus en plus ouvert à vos propositions…

On a pensé que, en dehors des “séances centrales” (10h-13h, 17h-20h) auxquelles idéalement tout le monde va participer, une fois sur place nous allons sûrement ajouter ensemble d’autres activités (par exemple une classe de qi gong, une discussion…) tard le soir et/ou tôt le matin, dans lesquelles les gens vont participer selon leurs envies, leurs rythmes de vie, leur énergie etc.

Le créneau de 13h à 17h est prévu pour pouvoir préparer à manger tranquillement, prendre un repas, avoir un bon temps de digestion avant de rebouger, faire une sieste ou ce qu’on veut…

On va gérer collectivement le nettoyage, la cuisine, les états d’âme…
Le groupe de préparation va s’occuper de faire des courses à l’avance.

La contribution financière pour les vivres et les dépenses de la maison sera probablement entre 20 et 30€ par personne. Ceci dit, s’il y a des personnes qui ne peuvent pas payer ça, on trouvera des solutions de redistribution entre nous…

On va camper, donc venez équipées avec une tente, un matelas de camping, un sac de couchage, des vêtements de pluie… des vêtements chauds aussi, car le lieu est à l’intérieur du pays, donc même s’il fait chaud pendant la journée, les nuits et les matins peuvent être fraîches… Pour la pratique, prévoyez des vêtements confortables et doux (sans boutons ou fermetures éclairs si possible), et des genouillères.

Ein internationales selbstorganisiertes Treffen zu Contact Improvisation und Körperpolitiken

8 – 13 April 2009, La Torre, Teruel (Spanischer Staat)

Auf diesem Treffen geht es darum, wie gesellschaftliche Herrschafts- und Ausbeutungsverhältnisse (Geschlecht, Rassifizierung, Klasse, Sexualität…) sich verkörpern; wie sie in unseren Körpern, unseren Bewegungsgewohnheiten, unserer Art zu berühren und zu sehen, konkret werden.

Unser Ziel ist es, neue Kombinationen emanzipatorischer Praktiken zu entwickeln, die der Untrennbarkeit von Körper, Emotion und Denken Rechnung tragen. Unser Wunsch ist, die Grenzen zwischen Kunst, Therapie und Politik zu überschreiten…

Um uns konkretes Forschungs- und Praxiswerkzeug anzueignen, schlagen wir vor, uns die ersten Tage des Treffens hauptsächlich mit den Grundlagen der Contact Improvisation zu beschäftigen: Reflexe und Gleichgewicht aufwecken, mit dem Gewicht arbeiten, entspannen; lernen, auf eine sehr subtile Art und Weise durch Berührung und Bewegung zu kommunizieren, zu verhandeln.

Im zweiten Teil des Treffens, so unser Vorschlag, würden wir uns dann mehr auf den (verbalen und physischen) Austausch konzentrieren, in Arbeitsgruppen zu verschiedenen Themen:

Führen und Folgen ++ Das Nein ++ Die Berührung ++ Der Blick ++ Körper und Weissheit ++ Heteronormativität ++ Das Gewicht des Körpers ++ Die Grenzen des Ich ++ Sexualitäten und Sinnlichkeiten ++ Die Sozialisation der Körper ++ Etc…

Wir schlagen vor, diese Themen ausgehend von konkreten Situationen in der Praxis der Contact Improvisation zu erforschen, indem wir dieses “Material” mit unseren Alltagserfahrungen und unserer Kritik und Sicht der Gesellschaft verbinden.

Das Treffen ist gemischt, aber wir dachten, zu verschiedenen Zeiten könnten wir in verschiedenen Arten von nicht-gemischten Gruppen arbeiten.

Die Tatsache, dass wir die OrganisatorInnen thematische Vorschläge machen, bedeutet nicht, dass alles von vornherein festgelegt ist. Kommt mit euren Ideen, es wird Platz für sie geben! Und natürlich ist das Treffen für “AnfängerInnen” genauso offen wir für Leute mit mehr Bewegegungserfahrung.

Das Treffen ist auf dem Land, im Haus eines Kollektivs, in dem öfters selbstorganisierte Treffen stattfinden, feministische Selbstverteidigungsworkshops zum Beispiel.

Dieses Einladungsschreiben, das wir an diverse Leute in verschiedenen Ländern verschicken, gibt es in einer spanischen, einer englischen, einer französischen und einer deutschen Version. Wir hoffen, dass das Treffen sehr international wird. Wir werden wahrscheinlich mit Übersetzungen in mindestens drei Sprachen (Spanisch, Englisch, Französisch) arbeiten.

Unserer Ansicht nach ist es sehr wichtig, die Übersetzung kollektiv und effizient zu organisieren. Übersetzen kann auch ein Feld des Lernens und neuer Erfahrungen sein – und, man könnte “Übersetzung” im weiteren Sinne auch als ein Motiv sehen, das mit den anderen Themen dieses Treffens eng verwandt ist…

In “La Torre” gibt es ein grosses Studio, in dem man mit Gruppen von maximal dreißig Leuten arbeiten kann. Wir schlagen zwei dreistündige Sessions vor, eine von 10 bis 13 Uhr und eine von 17 bis 20 Uhr. Für die ersten Tage wird das Programm größtenteils von uns den OrganisatorInnen festgelegt sein, später wird es dann zunehmend offener für eure Vorschläge…

Wir haben uns gedacht, dass, zusätzlich zu den Haupt-Sessions (10h-13h, 17h-20h), an denen idealerweise alle teilnehmen, wir bestimmt, wenn erstmal alle vor Ort sind, gemeinsam noch andere Aktivitäten später am Abend oder früher am Morgen hinzufügen werden (zum Beispiel eine Qi Gong Klasse, eine Diskussion…) an denen die Leute dann je nach Interesse, Lebensrhythmus, Energie etc teilnehmen.

Die lange Pause von 13h bis 17 Uhr soll ermöglichen, ohne Hektik kochen und essen zu können, ausreichend Zeit zum Verdauen zu haben, bevor es mit Bewegen weitergeht, zu schlafen oder was immer man will…

Wir werden alles kollektiv bewältigen: Putzen, Kochen, emotionale Zustände…
Die Vorbereitungsgruppe wird im Voraus Lebensmittel einkaufen.

Der Beitrag für Lebensmittel und das Haus wir wahrscheinlich zwischen 20 und 30 € pro Person liegen. Wenn Leute das nicht bezahlen können, werden wir interne Umverteilungslösungen finden…

Wir werden campen, kommt also ausgerüstet mit einem Zelt, einer Matte, einem Schlafsack, Regensachen… auch warme Kleidung, denn der Ort ist im Landesinneren, und auch dann wenn es nachmittags warm ist, kann es nachts und am Morgen recht kühl sein… Fürs Bewegen bringt bequeme und weiche Klamotten mit (keine Knöpfe oder Reißverschlüsse, wenn möglich), und Knieschoner.
